Batti Gul Meter Chalu

Batti Gul Meter Chalu is a light-hearted social drama that focuses on the electricity problems in small cities.
Cast : Shahid Kapoor, Shraddha Kapoor, Divyendu Sharma
Director : Shree Narayan Singh

Shree Narayan Singh after the success of his previous social drama: Toilet : Ek Prem Katha, turns up with Batti Gul Meter Chalu,a light hearted social drama which focuses unfortunately more on the love triangle than the social issue. The first half spends too much time establishing the relationship between the friends. I guess it took love Sonia's lack of emotional build-up way too seriously as the first half sheds little to no light on the social issue pertaining to the movie. However, the second half more than makes up for the overly melodramatic first half of the movie.
The entire cast easily adapts to the dialect of Uttarakhand with Shahid Kapoor being the stand out with the highlight being the court room monologue.Shraddha Kapoor deserves a pat on the back for a good performance and a commendable adaptation of a small town designer with a dodgy taste in fashion but a good heart. Divyendu Sharma delivers a good performance and makes us feel his despair and disappointment regarding his factory.
Overall the screenplay is very good with the highlight being Shahid Kapoor's monologue, Divyendu Sharma's confession in court and the entire casts hilarious one liners. The setting of this movie is very good with great shots of amazing hilltops of Uttarakhand and the Ganga. Yami Gautam also makes a cameo in the courtroom but fails to leave a mark. The soundtrack of this movie is mediocre at best with some songs being good and the others a bit tedious.
Overall we would give this movie a 3/5 for the entire cast and a great screenplay but the movie  focuses too much on establishing the relationships between the characters and thus ends up a 3 hour long satisfactory social drama which provides the masala of a generic Bollywood movie and also delivers a social message.
